The role of technology in education has never been more important than it is today. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools have realised that solely relying on face-to-face teaching is not an effective strategy. Many schools successfully pivot between face-to-face teaching and learning as well as online learning to continue delivering the curriculum.
Technology is everywhere. Chances are your child or teen probably has a tablet or even a mobile phone, where they’re playing games or socialising on social media (with your permission). Whether we like it or not, children need to be exposed to technology to be able to fit into and excel in the modern business world.
“If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow.”
John Dewey
So, just how important is technology in the classroom? Here are 5 reasons why technology is beneficial in education:
1. Offers plenty of online resources
There is an endless amount of information that is merely a click away. Students require multiple resources when it comes to projects or homework, and technology has made sourcing information extremely easy. It has simplified research and made concepts easier to understand through videos and online tutorials.
Teachers can use this to their benefit too. Through advanced technology, they can research video presentations on certain subjects and present it to the class. This is an effective way to teach as visuals are important in helping children understand and learn.
2. Online testing and quizzes
One important way that technology has changed education, is through saving the environment. Going digital has prevented excessive printing of activities and use of paper. Teachers now have the ability to conduct class exercises, tests and quizzes online.
“Technology will not replace great teachers, but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational.”
George Couros
Online testing is the way of the future and many teachers are able to provide instant results to their students. There are also plenty of online courses available as well as apps designed to provide extra lessons to those in need of more assistance.
3. Lessons are more interactive
Technology in education has phased out traditional teaching methods. What was once chalk boards are now white boards that are simple and easy to use. Teachers can call on students to actively participate, turning regular teaching into more engaging lessons.
Teachers now have the opportunity to enhance their lessons through audio visuals, podcasts, webinars and more. Whereas textbooks can be somewhat boring and kids tend to lose interest very quickly, videos and interactive activities will keep them interested and learning.
4. Kids are digital whizzes
The current generation are considered to be very tech-savvy. They grew up with technology around them. It can be the TV, their tablet or even their computer or video games. For this reason, children learn much faster and are able to multi-task much easier than previous generations. Since every child is different and unique, technology allows them to learn at their own pace.
5. The future is digital
There is always something new when it comes to technology. It is advancing everyday and replacing many old-school trends. In order for children to succeed in the future, technology needs to be available and utilised in school. This will give them the added advantage they need to succeed.
At Trinityhouse, we believe the power of education can be transformed with technology. For this reason, we have STEAM Centres at our campuses in which an interactive curriculum is delivered. This curriculum focuses on practical-based learning for our students to explore their own interests through STEAM education.
